When was the last time you had one of 'those days' or 'those weeks' or even 'those months'? Did you ever try to tell yourself just to 'snap out of it'? Did it work? No?
The reason we sometimes have one of 'those days' is that when we are feeling low, tired, ill or had a few negative experiences in a row, our subconscious minds start to link them together using something called Confirmation Bias. To read more about the science behind this and how to overcome it click here in our "Parenting - Decisions and why you are not doing it all wrong" Article.
So what is the simple but yet effective way to help you 'snap out of it'?
You may automatically think of food, wine or chocolate (or even something worse!) but these will do more harm than good. Yes, they may give you joy for a brief moment, but the chances are they won't fix the underlying issue and you will end up feeling worse soon enough.
The answer actually requires a bit of homework prepared on a good day. So the next time you're feeling happy and balanced, pull out a notepad and a pen and write down all the little things you enjoy in life. You could include things like:
- Going for a swim / walk / run
- A chat on the phone to an old friend
- A day trip out with the family
- A bath
- A good movie
Then, the next time you feel down and discouraged with life, pick out your list and make the time to make sure you do at least one thing from it. Chances are just looking at the list and choosing one of your favourite pass times will both bring back happy memories and start the processes of re-balancing your emotions.
By the time you've managed to complete something from your list, you should be feeling more energised, less-stressed and better able to cope with whatever was pulling you down in the first place.
